To Celebrate the Feast of St. John of the Cross

“The soul that is attached to anything however much good there may be in it, will not arrive at the liberty of divine union. For whether it be a strong wire rope or a slender and delicate thread that holds the bird, it matters not, if it really holds it fast; for, until the cord be broken the bird cannot fly."
~St. John of the Cross

I love this quote because it is an excellent reminder of how even the smallest things, those that seem the most insignificant, can really keep us from loving God. It doesn't matter that we are free from big addictions and large-scale sins; our attachment to little things (clothes that look a certain way, food that tastes a certain way, cars or pens or purses or sports teams) will also keep us from union with God. Because even if the cord that holds back the bird is thin and seemingly meaningless, still the bird is unable to fly.
